Monetize Your Life Skills

Before embarking on how you can monetize your life skills, let’s first be clear on what we are talking about.

Monetize according to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary, means –

“To coin into money and also to establish as legal tender.”

Monetize Your Talents & Life Skills

When discussing life skills and monetizing them, we’re referring to how you can use a skill you already have to earn money from it.

We all have skills in various areas. Most of us have many skills but, it’s important to think about them as valuable commodities and honing in on those gifts, so that we can add income streams to them in order to create more opportunities for ourselves.

Now whether those opportunities lie in the idea of opening new doors career-wise, or whether we are talking about more opportunities for us to buy more of what we need or desire in life, there is no denying it, that it’s a benefit all-round to monetize upon our knowledge!

Whether you are excellent at baking cakes, great at training dogs, a skilled writer or are great at fixing things around the house, you certainly have a skill that you can market and people will gladly pay you to do so! Some may find it hard to imagine, but it’s simpler than you may think.

If you don’t think you have any skills, trust me you do! It doesn’t have to be something you’re necessarily passionate about. It can just be some skill that interests you and that you have a fair amount of knowledge, excitement and insight into.

So, what can you do to start this new venture?

Set a goal of what you’d like to accomplish using this skill. For example, if you’re a skilled dog trainer who has experience potty training dogs, that could be a service that you could offer. Set a goal of when you’ll begin this new venture and the set amount of time on average that it takes to train each dog based on your years of experience.

Document your plan and ask yourself why what you’re offering is going to be important for your market.

Are there people in dire need of your offer? If you respond with a yes, and you know that people are feeling frustrated not having access to what you have to offer, then you’re onto something that has the potential to become a very big income source for you.

Now, once you see there is a definite need; then market that to prospective clients in need of your product or service.

Remember, nothing has to be set in stone. Just start and see where things go. Successful entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals know that change is inevitable in business. You may start your service in potty training dogs, but may then venture out into new areas based on the various demands from your clients, your existing skills or new opportunities that may come your way. And these opportunities  may be ones you may have never thought of when you had originally started your service.

You may also realize areas of the business that you enjoy doing more than others. These all could mean new opportunities to leverage, grow and expand. You may even experience more ways to meet your original business goal in a very unexpected way. But here’s the thing… Once you begin, you’d be surprised by what may be in store for you!

If you have a skill, but are unsure how to market it, you can get a step-by-step plan to help put your idea into perspective. Think of it as your personal assistant there to guide you along the way.

People want to save time – not to mention dealing with the hassle of doing something they have little knowledge of or skill in. So, that’s where you’d come in!

Seriously, people are looking for you to help them. And they’re willing to pay you handsomely for it because they don’t want to deal with the pain of doing it themselves. And if you can get the job done quicker and better than they can, it’s a no-brainer for them to hire you to do it!

So, don’t hesitate a second longer!

Business Design: Are you meeting the needs of your market?

With any business, being very intentional about knowing your customer is critical. After all, if you don’t know them — their needs and wants, then how can you offer them what they’re looking for?

The most successful businesses give their customers what they need on a continual basis and that’s why their customers continue to stay with them year after year.

Here is a visual snapshot of what your customer is looking for? Have you met them where they’re at?

Business Fundamentals for Customer Engagement
Business Design Principles for Success

Below, I’ve re-written the points outlined in the visual. Be sure that you’re able to say that you’ve included each one in your business. If you haven’t already, ask yourself how you can do so. By having these areas outlined for you, you’ll better be able to see them objectively and ensure your business is doing the same.

So, be sure that your business includes these 4 points:

1. WANTS – Give your most valued customer what they WANT. Then sell them what they NEED.
2. WHY – Know why you’re doing what you’re doing & know why you want to solve their problem.
3. WHERE – It’s all about POSITIONING! Know where to meet your clients in the right place and at the right time.

But most importantly offer them the right marketing that’s going to grab their attention by ensuring that you’re answering their MOST burning question/issue.

4. Solve their problem by giving them results!

The Power of Reciprocity in Business & Life

business reciprocity, give to others, share connect listen and inspire your audience

You’re looking out for the interests of your readers, customers and clients and because you have built that loyalty, they too are concerned about you and they are looking out for your best interests as well. Robert Cialdini wrote about the power of reciprocity in his books “YES” and “Influence”. The law of reciprocity is more powerful than many businesses even know.

Gone are the days when businesses talked about themselves and how good their products and services are. We – the consumer, have become tired of the self-centered and self-serving tactics that narcissistic companies have thrown at us over the years. In this day and age, we, the consumer, have become aware of these tactics and they no longer lead us to buy.

Consumers have now banded together to share, influence and help one another. This has become most prevalent with the growth of social media and our need and desire to share and connect. It’s these connections and fostered online relationships that have moved us away from accepting the rigid confines of companies dictating their offers to us. Our very vocal social tendencies have moved us towards a very intuitive and instinctive realization that we do matter. Our needs matter tremendously. Companies cannot thrive without us and we now feel empowered to be more vocal and share our thoughts on the products and services that we use.

Now, with the abundance of companies competing for their share of the pie – and vying for our attention, these companies know that we mean business! If we feel that our needs are not met, we won’t hesitate to go elsewhere.

The Law of Reciprocity works both ways. If companies meet our needs by going out of their way to ensure that we are happy, we will share our love for their products and services with everyone we come in contact with. The same is true for anyone who goes out of their way to connect others. If you know someone with a need and then you connect them with someone you know who can fulfill that need without wanting or expecting anything in return, you naturally will be rewarded at some point because those two people will remember that you helped them out. And naturally, when they think of you in the future, they will want to recommend you to those they know. Companies that try to listen and connect with their consumers and users are the ones that are thriving. They understand the laws of reciprocity and the power of reciprocity moves them ahead in business.

So, whether you are a product creator or a service provider, if you listen to your audience and give them the results that they desire, you will thrive and grow as a business. People will talk about you and share their love for your offerings. That means your business will naturally start to market itself without heavy strategic or misleading tactics. The universe will naturally work in your favor.

Using the law of reciprocity in business is abundantly rewarding if you do it with grace and with a genuine desire to help your audience and partners to reach their goals. It’s a true testament to the ideology that you reap what you sew.

Share your thoughts! Do you use the law of reciprocity in your business? Have you read any of Robert Cialdini’s books or learned through his teachings?

Please share your thoughts on this topic. I’d love to hear from you!
